When you think of Terminal, you probably imagine some hacker sitting in front of their computer in a dimly lit room trying to break into an FBI database. In reality, it's just a simple tool that can make using your Mac much easier.Now, I'm not saying that learning Terminal commands is easy, but using them definitely is. I've compiled a list of some basic commands that will get you started on your journey to mastering Mac OS X, whether it's Mavericks, Yosemite, or even an older system like Lion.Don't Miss: 6 Tweaks You Should Be Using on Your Mac Right Now Don't Miss: 8 Menu Bar Apps Every Mac Power User Needs I've run all of these commands on my MacBook running Yosemite, but if you are an early El Capitan adopter, your mileage may vary due to the fact that it's an early beta still.
#1: Restart Your Mac Automatically After It FreezesMacs may be reliable, but they have been known to freeze up on occasion. If you'd rather not deal with having to manually force a shutdown, you can use this Terminal command to make OS X instantly reboot on a freeze.sudo systemsetup -setrestartfreeze on

#2: Check for Software Updates DailyBy default, the Mac App Store checks for updates on a weekly basis, but if you'd rather get app updates as soon as possible, you can use this command to have it check daily.defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate ScheduleFrequency -int 1
#3: Change Screenshot File TypeIf you don't like that screenshots are saved as PNG files on your Mac, you can switch it to either BMP, GIF, JPG, PDF, or TIFF instead. Just be sure to change the "png" portion of the below command to your desired file extension.defaults write com.apple.screencapture type -string "png"
#4: Change Screenshot LocationDon't like screenshots cluttering up your desktop? You can change the save location using the following command. Just swap out the "/folderlocation" part with the full location of the folder you want. More details here.defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /folderlocation Note: see the end of this guide for instructions on using folder locations with spaces in their name.

#5: Show All Hidden Files & FoldersUnlike in Windows, there is no option to view hidden files and folders in Mac OS X, unless you know the exact location. But by using this Terminal command, you can make them all visible. To hide them again, change "true" to "false."defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true To see the changes appear immediately, make sure to hold "Alt" on your keyboard, right-click on Finder in your Dock, then click on "Relaunch."
#6: Hide or Unhide Files & Folders IndividuallyIf you don't want to see every hidden file and folder on your Mac, you can unhide them one by one instead. As an example, the Library folder is the biggest one that most people want to unhide, so let's do that. (Note that ~ is a shortcut for your main username directory.)chflags nohidden ~/Library/ Now let's try it with a file. The following one will hide the Secrets folder in my Documents.chflags hidden ~/Documents/Secrets Note: see the end of this guide for instructions on using file and folder locations with spaces in their name.
#7: Automatically Open a Finder Window When a Drive Is MountedTo make it so that Finder automatically loads a new window any time a flash drive (or any other type of volume) is mounted, use these next commands:defaults write com.apple.frameworks.diskimages auto-open-ro-root -bool true defaults write com.apple.frameworks.diskimages auto-open-rw-root -bool true defaults write com.apple.finder OpenWindowForNewRemovableDisk -bool true Just change them back to "false" if you want to revert back.
#8: Disable the Warning When Emptying the TrashIf you like to live life on the edge and not worry about accidentally deleting a file that you actually put in the Trash, you can use the command below to disable that pop-up warning.defaults write com.apple.finder WarnOnEmptyTrash -bool false
#9: Securely Delete Files IndividuallyIf you want to securely erase files from your Mac, but don't want to make "Secure Empty Trash" the default, you can securely shred files one by one in Terminal. The following command uses one-pass overwriting before trashing. (Substitute "/draggedfile" by dragging the file you want over.)srm -s /draggedfile And this one uses seven passes:srm -m /draggedfile If it's a folder you want to get rid of, use -rf after the srm part.srm -rf /draggedfolder Click here to see more options for securely erasing files/folders.
#10: Add Send Shortcut to the OS X Mail AppThe Mail app does not come with a hotkey to send an email since the Enter key is only set to insert a line break. But by using the following command, you'll create a new keyboard shortcut (Command + Enter) for sending mail.defaults write com.apple.mail NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add "Send" -string "@\\U21a9?

#11: Disable Automatic Emoji SubstitutionFor those of you who like to live in the '90's state of mind, you can make it so that emoji no longer replaces traditional emoticons with this.defaults write com.apple.messageshelper.MessageController SOInputLineSettings -dict-add "automaticEmojiSubstitutionEnablediMessage" -bool false

#12: Add Extra Information to Login WindowThe login window doesn't reveal much information about your device, but if you'd like it to show some extra info, like your IP address and OS version, use this next command. The information appears when you click on the menu bar's clock and is displayed one at a time.sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow AdminHostInfo HostName

#13: Make Terminal Talk to YouThis last Terminal command makes it so you have you own personal robot voice generator. All you have to do is enter "say" and add text inside quotes.
Note for Folder/File Names with Spaces in ThemFor some of the tips above, like hiding specific folders or changing the screenshot save location, the location's name might have a space in it. Using just a space in Terminal won't work. Instead, add a \ after each word except the last, while keeping the spaces. For example:top secret picture.jpg Would be:top\ secret\ picture.jpg

In its latest attempt to break into America, Huawei is trying to get its Chinese mobile chipset accredited by AT&T.The world's third-largest smartphone maker, Huawei's presence isn't felt in the States at all, with no US carriers selling the company's phones for their main services. Nevertheless, it's worldwide reach is still a threat to Apple and Samsung, and chipset accreditation is vital to breaking into the US market.Android smartphone makers primarily use Qualcomm's chipsets, but Huawei uses a Kirin line of processors by Huawei subsidiary HiSilicon. If you drop your smartphone in water, take it apart as much as you can and place it in rice. It's been the most recommended method of cell phone rescue since the days of clamshells. In fact, it's usually the only thing recommended when searching for "how to save your wet phone." Turns out, we've been wrong all along.Gazelle, the company best known for buying people's used electronic devices, performed a series of tests to determine the best ways to prevent damage to phones dropped in water.

The Sponge TestPre-weighed sponges soaked with water (and then weighed again) were used in this experiment. Gazelle placed them into sealed plastic containers with 100 grams each of six different drying agents. There was also a wet sponge left out in open air, and one sealed in a container by itself. Image via Gazelle Each sponge was placed on top of wax paper, to prevent direct contact with the drying agents, since in a smartphone, there is normally no direct contact with the drying agent.
Uncooked White Rice Ain't Cutting ItAfter 24 hours, the sponges were weighed again to see how much weight had been lost. And would you believe it—according to the results, uncooked white rice placed dead last in effectiveness as a drying agent. Here's the list, from best to worst.Open-air sponge - 7.6 mL lost Silica gel - 6.1 mL lost Cat litter - 5.5 mL lost Instant couscous - 5.0 mL lost Instant rice - 5.0 mL lost Instant oatmeal - 5.0 mL lost Uncooked white rice - 4.0 mL lost Sealed-container sponge - 0.7 mL lost Cat litter, instant couscous, instant rice, and instant oatmeal all performed better than uncooked white rice—everyone's favorite damn drying agent.

The Cell Phone TestThe second experiment they performed was similar, using a few iPhones and Samsung Galaxy S3 devices. Using the same drying agents as above, it was also shown that uncooked white rice was the biggest loser. The results of Gazelle's test with phones submerged in water and "dried" with household items.

Instant Couscous/Rice Is More PourousSo why did drying agents such as instant couscous and instant rice perform better than uncooked white rice?On Twitter, Gazelle explained that both of these instant products are steamed, which cracked starch. Starch, already known for its absorbent nature, becomes more porous thus taking in more water than usual. Rice on the other hand is a grain, which has not been ground up, so it still has its layers from being a seed. As a seed, it can only absorb a limited amount of water for it to grow into a plant. If it absorbed as much as something like pasta (which contains lots of starch), it would dissolve and become useless as a seed.
Silica Gel vs. Open AirWhile instant couscous and instant rice work better than uncooked white rice, silica gel works the best out of all drying agents that Gazelle tested.But while silica gel performed well, the sponge left out in the open (71°F; relative humidity of 40%) lost the most amount of water in the tests. With this information, should you leave your phone out in the open or place it in silica gel?Since there is a wide range in performance for each drying agent, choosing one or the other could have a direct impact on the recovery of your smartphone, whether it be positive or negative. If a drying agent cannot absorb moisture quickly enough, the air that's trapped in the container or ziplock bag will become humid and slow down evaporation.Since there is not enough information (as of yet), a fortified statement of whether or not air or silica gel works better cannot be made. Factors such as amount of drying agent, brand of drying agent, type of smartphone, time of day, and more all play a role in how each performs.Although the open-air method lost the most water, according to Gazelle, this does not mean that a drying agent cannot outperform open air under certain circumstances. Increasing the amount of drying agent could help dry out the smartphone better.
So, What You Should You Do Then?Well, let's take it step by step for you.

Step 1: Dry Your Phone with Paper Towels, VacuumBefore even trying to dump your phone into a drying agent, the first step you should perform is to turn off your smartphone or take out the battery. Dry the outside and use something like a vacuum (waterproof) in order to extract any water stuck on the inside. You might not get all of it, but you should try and get the most you can out of there.

Step 2: Open Your Phone UpIn order for air circulation to do its job, take off the back cover and battery out of your smartphone. Furthermore, you can use a Phillips screwdriver in order to take apart most Android smartphones. If you have an iPhone, you can purchase a pentalobe screwdriver for under $5 online. Once it's open, leave it out for a bit and let it dry in the open air. Image via iPhonizate Note: Taking apart your phones may void your warranty, but then again, so will dropping it in water.

Step 3: Use a Drying AgentFinally, after getting rid of as much water possible from the inside of your device, using a drying agent may help. If you decide to use a drying agent, don't use uncooked white rice. Instead, go with silica gel—the best performing agent of the ones used in the Gazelle experiment. While cat litter works better than the two previous mentioned drying agents, some of the particles from the litter could possibly enter your device, so use it carefully.

In the shadow of Facebook's announcement for third-party app development on Messenger, the company has announced the release of a whole new application called Riff, a creative tool for making videos with friends. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

So What Is Riff?The best way to describe this new app is to compare it to one that most of us are familiar with. Riff is essentially Snapchat's "Stories" feature, only your Facebook friends have the ability to add on to your video. There's no commenting, liking, or up-voting involved, just viewing and contributing.

How Does It Work?As you may have already figured out, it starts off by signing in with your Facebook account. Once you're in, you can look through the featured videos or begin filming your own. Videos cannot be edited or use a multi-shot feature like Vine; they're just a one-time recording that can last up to twenty seconds. As the original creator, you'll have the option to control your video by being able to delete what others add-on.
How Do Your Friends Get Involved?Your buddies will also need to sign into Riff using their Facebook login, after which they'll be able to see your video. Using the plus button, your friends can record reactions or just contribute to the video in any way they want—this is usually done by sticking with the theme of the video's tag. Riff videos posted to Facebook will automatically tag all of the contributors.
Final Thoughts?Facebook's last video app venture, Slingshot—which tried to compete with Snapchat's already-established service—didn't bode so well for the company (it was a complete flop). But hey, when you're as big as Facebook, you can afford to take chances, and I see real potential for Riff.These days, all my friends on Snapchat use the Stories feature, so the ability to respond or contribute to the videos, as Riff allows, makes it a lot more inclusive, fun, and interactive. Considering how often many of us fly on commercial airlines, the idea that a hacker could somehow interfere with the plane is a very scary thought. It doesn't help to learn that at Defcon, a researcher found that the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B), transmissions that planes use to communicate with airport towers are both unencrypted and unauthenticated.So, not only would it be fairly easy to transmit fake signals to and from planes in the air, but the pilots and air traffic controllers would have no way of knowing if it was real or not. Hacking into an airline's ADS-B protocol isn't theoretical either, it's actually fairly easy to do for anyone with a bit of know-how. A $20 USB TV-tuner can be turned into a software-defined radio that can receive ADS-B signals. Even less tech-savvy individuals can easily pick up a pre-built ADS-B compatible radio for well under $1,000. There are certainly benign uses, like tracking plane routes for fun perhaps, but the potential for harm is huge. A hacker could perform a real-life DoS attack by flooding an air traffic tower's system with fake signals from nonexistent planes. While air traffic controllers can manually check the transmissions against flight logs, there's no way to automatically see if a signal is authentic, meaning just a few thousand fake broadcasts could easily overwhelm the personnel.Individuals could also hit pilots with fake reports of other aircraft in the vicinity, causing them to panic or change course to avoid hitting "ghost" planes. They could even make them crash into the ground during low-visibility scenarios. Even worse, some believe that technology similar to what was used by Iran to ground a military UAV could be utilized to bring down commercial aircraft.
