How To: Fix Lighting Issues Using Photoshop Express for More Balanced Images
It's difficult to find that perfect lighting when you're taking a photo. You won't always have studio lights — or at all — and you're not always out during golden hour. So how can you combat lighting issues without waiting around for a well-lit condition? Do it in post. Adobe's Photoshop Express makes it easy to fix and even customize the lighting in your photos using the right adjustments. There are typically two main types of problems regarding the lighting in a photo; either the image is too bright or too dark. However, another common problem is temperature, the overall color of the picture. Using just a few PS Express functions on Android and iOS, you can combat all of these problems and achieve neutrally toned photos even if your lighting was less than perfect when you took them.Don't Miss: Create Custom Photo Filters in Lightroom for Faster Edits Later

Step 1: Adjust the ExposureWith the PS Express app open on your iPhone or Android phone, select the photo you would like to edit. Then, when trying to fix the overall lighting, the first place you should visit is the "Exposure" tool. You can find it in the adjustments menu (the tab icon with the sliders). In photography, exposure refers to how much light is allowed into your lens when capturing your photo. In Photoshop Express, exposure controls will determine the brightness of the image overall.Adjust the slider left or right. If your photo is too dark, you will need to turn up the exposure (go to the right). If it's too light, you will need to turn it down (to the left). A helpful tip when dealing with exposure is to make sure that you're never adjusting it so far in any direction that the whites or blacks in your image lose their detail. This is what we call "washed out."

Step 2: Adjust the ContrastContrast refers to the difference between the lights and darks of an image. Adjusting the contrast will not adjust brightness but the distance between light and dark. If you turn down the contrast, your image will begin to look more vintage. If you turn up the contrast, you will end up with an image that has strong colors and an iridescent feel.In the adjustments menu, tap the "Contrast" control and adjust its slider. A helpful tip when dealing with contrast is if your image is "washed out," turning down (to the left) the contrast can help bring back some of the detail that was lost. Another reason to turn down contrast would be to create a vintage-looking image.Turning up the contrast (to the right) will bring out more brightness in the colors of your image and could help better distinguish between areas of light and dark. Adjust this slider specific your image and to your taste.

Step 3: Adjust the Highlights & WhitesNext, we have the "Highlights" tool, which adjusts only the brightest parts of the image. The "Whites" tool does the same thing but it has a wider tonal range than that of "Highlights." These two work hand-in-hand when fixing the lights in an image, so that's why they're combined into one step here.If the brights in your image seem too light or too dark, play around with both "Highlights" and "Whites" until your image's brights become more balanced. Be careful not to wash the image out.

Step 4: Adjust the Shadows & BlacksJust like with the previous combo of options, the "Shadows" and "Blacks" tools work hand-in-hand to fix the lighting on the opposite end of the spectrum. "Shadows" adjusts only the darkest parts of the image. "Blacks" does the same thing but it has a wider tonal range than that of "Shadows."Play around with both of these sliders to find the right balance of darks for your pic.

Step 5: Adjust the TemperatureAnother reason that a photo's lighting can look off is color temperature. Typically, if you take a photo under dim lighting, the temperature will shift to warm. On the flip side of the coin, under fluorescent lights, a photo can look too cool.Select the "Temperature" control and adjust your bar accordingly. To fix a photo that is too warm, slide the temperature bar towards the cool (blue) direction (to the left). If your photo is too cool, slide the bar into the warm (yellow) direction (to the right).
Step 6: Use Filters to Do All the WorkAnother way to fix the lighting in an image, especially if you have a specific type of lighting in mind, is to use filters, which Adobe calls "Looks" in Photoshop Express. Filters, however, are not always a quick fix.If you want to use a filter, you may need to make a few adjustments first in order to get the correct effect from the look. Scroll over to the "Looks" tab (the interconnected circles) at the bottom of the screen. For lighting effects, you'll only want to use the filters in the "White Balance" category, but you can learn about all the filters on Photoshop Express in my previous guide. After working your magi to fix lighting problems, don't forget to save your photo after you finish and share it if that's what you want to do.More Info: Save Time on Quick Adjustment Edits with Filter 'Looks' in Photoshop ExpressFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Log into FaceTime & Messages in iOS 11 with Alternate iCloud Accounts

How To: Log into FaceTime & Messages in iOS 11 with Alternate iCloud Accounts
In a classic case of one step forward, two steps back, Apple has eliminated the ability to use multiple iCloud accounts for FaceTime and Messages in iOS 11, meaning the primary Apple ID on the account is the only one allowed. As inconvenient as this omission is, there's still a way to use alternate iCloud accounts on your iPhone with a little hackery.Mind you, the process is a little convoluted, and there's currently no way to freely switch between your primary and secondary iCloud accounts. That said, if you just want the bare-bones functionality of having multiple accounts to use in apps like Messages and FaceTime, we'll show you the best workaround we've found so far.Don't Miss: The 9 Most Annoying Changes in iOS 11 & How to Fix Them
How It Used to Work in iOS 10Before diving right in, it's good to know how this worked in iOS 10, so you don't confuse this with just adding additional emails for FaceTime and Messages. Before, to use a different iCloud account for Messages, you would go to "Messages" in Settings, tap on "Send & Receive," tap on your Apple ID up top, then "Sign Out." Afterward, you could just tap on "Use your Apple ID for iMessage" from the main "Messages" settings to sign into a different iCloud account. In iOS 11 when you try to do this, it automatically signs you back into the device's primary Apple ID — you can't enter a new one.The process for using a different iCloud account for FaceTime was similar in iOS 10, and also no longer works in iOS 11. But there's a workaround for all of this madness.
How It Works Now in iOS 11The way this works is simple. By default, iOS 11 uses the primary iCloud account attached to your iPhone to sign into all iCloud-enabled apps (FaceTime, iMessage, and others). However, if you sign out of the main iCloud account, you can sign into each service individually using separate accounts. Once you've done that, you can sign back into your primary iCloud account for features like app and photo backup.

Step 1: Sign Out of Your Main iCloud AccountSo first, you'll need to sign out of your main iCloud account. To do that, open Settings, then tap on your name at the top to access your main account settings. Once you're inside your primary account's settings page, scroll all the way down and tap on "Sign Out." A confirmation prompt will pop up right after, so tap on "Sign Out'" again to finalize your selection.

Step 2: Sign into FaceTime with One AccountAfter you've successfully signed out of your main iCloud account, go back to the main Settings page and tap on FaceTime. From there, tap on "Use your Apple ID for FaceTime" and sign in with an alternate account, then tap on "Sign In" when complete.

Step 3: Sign into Messages with Another AccountThe method for signing in with an alternate account in Messages is the same process as outlined for FaceTime, except you'll probably be using a separate account. So tap on "Messages" from within the main Settings page right above FaceTime, then sign in the same way your did earlier — but this time, use your alternate account.

Step 4: Sign Back in to iCloudOnce you've signed into both FaceTime and Messages using different accounts, go back to the main settings page. From there, tap on "Sign in to your iPhone" right under the search bar at the top of the page, then fill in your primary account's credentials as you normally would. All told, you'll now have three active accounts: One for iCloud, one for Messages, and another for FaceTime. It's not a pretty by any standards, but at least you can use both FaceTime and iMessage on an alternate account while still keeping your main account active for security purposes. Hopefully, Apple will remedy this issue as future iOS 11 updates roll out, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Until then, we'll have to make do with what we have.Don't Miss: 90+ Cool New iOS 11 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Use Snapchat to Figure Out What Song Is Playing Around You

How To: Use Snapchat to Figure Out What Song Is Playing Around You
Say you're sending a snap to a friend at a restaurant, bar, store, what have you, but you're curious about the song that's playing in the background. You could leave the app to Shazam it, or you could ask screen-hogging Siri or Google Assistant what the track is, but why not just have Snapchat do the work for you? With its built-in scanner, you can discover a song without ever leaving the app.The built-in scanner can be used to accomplish a myriad of tasks. Music discovery is just one of those uses, which has been around since Snap's partnership with Shazam started in 2017. With it, you can see exactly what song is playing, hear a preview of the song to make sure it's the right one, send and share the song with friends, and even see related video content, all without ever leaving Snapchat.Just make sure you're on the latest version of Snapchat for Android and iOS to make use of all available Shazam-related features for your iPhone or Android phone.Don't Miss: How to Add GIFs from Giphy to Your Snaps in Snapchat

1. Identify the Song & Listen on Your Music ServiceScanning in Snapchat is possibly the easiest feature the app has to offer. Simply tap-and-hold anywhere on the camera screen, and you'll see the scanner get to work around your finger. The music notes denote that Snapchat is listening for a song and, if one is playing, that it is "searching" for it via Shazam to figure it out for you.If Shazam hits a match you'll see it pop right up. Note that we've found that Shazam's own app is more reliable for trickier, less popular songs, as they aren't usually recognized in Snapchat for some reason. In those cases where the search hangs, you might still have to use Shazam proper, Siri, or Google Assistant. To listen to the matched song on your phone, tap "Listen." You'll have options to open the song in Apple Music and Spotify on iOS or Google Play Music and Spotify on Android. If you choose not to listen to the song, you can always tap "Cancel" to return to the previous window.

2. View Previews, Lyrics, Video & Song RecommendationsIf you tap "Song Info" on the song pop-up, Snapchat will bring you to a profile of the song. At the top of this profile, you can tap the play button for a brief preview of the song. Tap the pause button to stop or let is stop by itself after the preview. On this info screen, you might also see song lyrics and video content related to this song, if any is available. For videos, it could show a music video, a behind-the-scenes clip, or something else related. In my example, it's a look behind of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" for The Beatles LOVE performance by Cirque du Soleil. Finally, you'll also see Recommended Songs at the bottom of this song profile. Tap on any track here to see its own individual song profile. You can tap the back arrow in the bottom left to return to the previous song profile. To leave any song profile at any time, swipe back up to the top of the info screen (if not already up there), then swipe down on the screen to return to Shazam pop-up.
3. Share the Song with FriendsSnapchat offers three different methods for sharing your Shazamed songs; You can send a Shazam link to any available app or service using your device's regular share options; send the song profile to your friends in Snapchat; or share a screenshot in Snapchat that you can doodle on top of like any other image in the camera.
Share via Device OptionsFor the first option, tap the vertical ellipsis (•••) in the top right of the matched song pop-up. Next, choose "Share Song To." Your device's standard sharing options will open, which will let you copy the Shazam link (not a Snapchat link) or send it to apps like Gmail, Facebook, Google Drive, Signal, etc.

Send to Story, Friends, or Group Right AwayTo do the second option, again, tap the vertical ellipsis (•••) in the top right of the matched song pop-up. Select "Send Song To," and you'll be able to send the song profile to your story or any friend or group on Snapchat, along with a chat note if you'd like. They, in turn, will be able to view all of the song preview options we detailed in the section above. Left: Share via device options. Middle/Right: Send on Snapchat right away.

Share with Annotations to Story, Friends, or GroupsFor the third and final option, tap "Song Info" to view the track's profile, then long-press on the page to not only quickly send the image to friends, but to also edit it like you would any other snap. Add drawings, text, GIFs, and more by tapping the pencil icon in the bottom left. When finished, tap the send button for the usual sending options, or tap the download button to save it to your phone.

4. Subscribe to the Artist (If Available)Some artists that appear on song searches actually let you subscribe to their profile's instantly, right after a search is completed. The catch is that the artist needs to set up an account with Snapchat first, otherwise this option will not appear. If the artist does have a profile, you'll know right away — just check underneath the song card. If there's a profile with a "Subscribe" button, just tap the button to instantly follow the artist on Snapchat (not Shazam). If there's no option, it means the artist simply doesn't have a Snapchat profile connected yet.

5. View All Your Shazamed Songs in SnapchatForgot the name of that song you Shazamed in Snapchat earlier? Snapchat didn't! After each successful song recognized in Snapchat — even if you close out of the pop-up quickly — is saved into a neat list so you'll never lose track of the songs you want to know about. You just need to know where to find the list.To find your Shazam history, tap your profile icon in the top left. Next, tap the Settings cog in the top right, then scroll down and select "Shazam" from the list. Here, you will find your entire search history. Tap on a song to view its "Song Info" page. Swipe left on any entry to "Delete" it (on iOS, it will show the "Delete" button that you need to tap, while on Android, it will just trash it right away). Note that anything Shazamed from inside the Snapchat app will not be synced to your Shazam account or app, if you have one. The songs in Snapchat stay in Snapchat. Also, there is currently no way to Shazam songs inside Snapchat Stories, if you were wondering about that.Don't Miss: How to Create & Use Stickers in SnapchatFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Get the Pixel's Navigation Buttons & Google Assistant Animation on Your Nexus
The Google Pixel and Pixel XL have an exclusive set of navigation buttons that you can't get on any other device without some tinkering. But aside from just being solid, filled-in shapes, the real treat in the Pixel's nav bar is the Google Assistant animation that gets activated by long-pressing the home button. The four colored dots that animate outward give you some visual feedback for triggering the Assistant, but really, it's just a nice little touch. Thanks to Charles Chow over at Chromloop, the Pixel's navigation buttons and their special animation are no longer an exclusive feature. By flashing one simple ZIP, you can now get the Pixel's navigation bar in all its glory on your Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P.Don't Miss: How to Get the Pixel's 'Zero Shutter Lag' Camera with HDR+ Features on Your Nexus
Requirementsrooted Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P beta version of Android 7.1.1 installed Android build number NPF10c custom recovery installed

Step 1: Download the ZIPIf you meet all of the above requirements, the first thing you'll need to do is download the flashable ZIP that gives you the Pixel's new navigation buttons and Google Assistant animation. There are two distinct files here, so make sure to grab the right one for your particular device:Download the Pixel Nav Bar Animation ZIP for Nexus 5X Download the Pixel Nav Bar Animation ZIP for Nexus 6P

Step 2: Flash the ZIP in Custom RecoveryNext up, boot your phone into custom recovery mode. From here, be sure to make a full NANDroid backup if you haven't done so recently. With that taken care of, tap the "Install" button from TWRP's main menu, then navigate to your device's Download folder. From there, select the Pixel-Navbar-Animation.zip file and swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to install the mod, then tap "Reboot system" when that's done.

Step 3: Enjoy the Pixel's Navigation ButtonsWhen you get back up, you should see the Pixel's solid navigation bar buttons at the bottom of your screen. Then, when you long-press your home button to trigger the Google app or Google Assistant, you'll see four colored dots animating outward behind your thumb. It's a subtle effect, but it's one of those small touches that has made the Pixel one of this year's best phones.
TroubleshootingIf you have any issues with this mod not working, there are a couple of troubleshooting tips you can try. First, if you see a "System UI has stopped" message immediately after rebooting, try restarting your device again. If you're having trouble restarting, hold down your power button for 10 seconds to perform a hard reboot. If that still doesn't fix your issues, reset any System UI Tuner mods by heading to Settings -> System UI Tuner, then tapping the three-dot menu button and choosing "Remove this menu." Once you've done that, reboot your phone and see if the buttons show up. If they do, you can re-add your System UI Tuner tweaks.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: The Top 10 New Features in iOS 12's Messages App for iPhone

News: The Top 10 New Features in iOS 12's Messages App for iPhone
Sometimes incorrectly referred to as "iMessage," the Messages app is where iPhone owners go to chat with iOS users across the world. Apple has made some significant improvements to the messaging app with its iOS 12 update for iPhone. If you're interested to see how your Messages experience has changed since installing the new firmware, check out the features below. As you might already know, iOS 12's main draw is in its overhaul of iOS' stability and performance. While you'll certainly see improvements on even an iPhone 5S, Messages has a lot more to offer than just a new speedy interface, and you can see everything it has for you in iOS 12 listed below.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know About for iPhone

1. Call & FaceTime from MessagesAudio and FaceTime calls, both group and one-on-one, are both easily accessible right from Messages. While you could make audio and video calls before, it wasn't as streamlined and didn't support group chats. In iOS 12, tap the contact circle (or circles) at the top of your chat, then tap either the "audio" or "FaceTime" buttons to immediately jump into a call. If participants in your group chat start a video call, you'll be able to see a "FaceTime" bubble in the chat. You can tap the "Join" button at any time to jump into the conversation. Unfortunately, group chat won't be arriving until a later iOS 12 update, so this experience will have to wait.Don't Miss: How to Use FaceTime's Group Chat on Your iPhone Images via Apple

2. Everyone Gets Filters in the Messages CameraWhen you launch the camera in a chat in Messages, you'll notice something other than your own face looking back at you. With iOS 12, you can use filters to create unique photos to send to friends and family. By tapping on the tri-colored circles in the Effects view, you can choose from a variety of fun and interesting effects to apply to your picture.Don't Miss: What Sucks About iOS 12's New Snapchat-Like Camera Effects

3. Everyone Gets StickersJust like filters, stickers can be used to personalize your photos taken in Messages. While all of your downloaded stickers will be available here, you might not need any to get started, but more on that later. The best part? IOS 12 recognizes your face's position in the frame and can map stickers wherever you place them. That way, even if you move the camera, the sticker "stays" in the same spot.

4. Text Support in the CameraIf you want to jazz your photos up with a little context, iOS 12 has just what you need. Simply tap the "Aa" text button, choose your text sticker, then get typing. Messages lets you resize and reposition the text sticker anywhere you want, to make sure your text doesn't get in the way of whatever it is you're snapping a photo of.

5. Activity Stickers for Apple Watch OwnersIf you have an Apple Watch with an iPhone running iOS 11, you might know you already have access to Activity Stickers for fitness awards you earn. With iOS 12, you can continue to expand your sticker collection with awards, but all Apple Watch users gain access to the same collection of animated stickers.More Info: Send Animated Activity Stickers That You Didn't Earn as iMessages Image by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks

6. The Camera Button Is Just a Camera Button NowOnce you boot up your iPhone after installing iOS 12, it might be difficult for you to find your photo library in Messages. If you tap the Camera icon like you normally would, it'll just launch the camera, with your photos nowhere to be seen. That's right — the camera button is just a camera button now, while your photos will be found in a separate Photos button.More Info: How to Access Your Photo Library in Messages for iOS 12
iPhone X-Only FeaturesNow, there are some new features here that won't be found on all iPhones. In fact, the following features are only coming to the iPhone X (and presumably the upcoming 2018 iPhones), as they all have to do with the iPhone X-exclusive feature "Animoji."Don't Miss: 9 Ways iOS 12 Makes the iPhone X Even Better

7. More AnimojiIOS 11.3 introduced four new Animoji upon release. Now, iOS 12 is taking a page from its book. The new update will sport an additional four new Animoji for iPhone X: the tiger, koala, T-Rex, and ghost. Image by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks

8. Improved Animoji InterfaceWhen you update your iPhone X to iOS 12, you'll notice your Animoji interface will be much cleaner than in iOS 11. You'll be able to swipe horizontally rather than vertically to select your Animoji, as well as pull up to view all Animoji options at once. Image by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks

9. Tongue/Wink DetectionYour Animoji now have tongue and wink detection, adding a new dimension to your animated pals. You can stick your tongue out at a sassy friend, send a wink, or both, all from within Messages. Images by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks

10. MemojiIf Animoji aren't personal enough for you, iOS 12 introduces a way for you to turn yourself into one — Memoji are identical to Animoji, except they're you! Set yours up like you would any other avatar — choose your eye color, hair, skin tone, accessories, etc., and you'll be on your way to sending personalized Memoji to all of your friends in Messages. How To: Get Rounded Screen Corners on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 or Other Android Device

How To: Get Rounded Screen Corners on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 or Other Android Device

Tired of your Samsung Galaxy S3 being a square? Make it more well-rounded by ditching those 90-degree corners on your screen for new adjustable round corners instead. It may be a minor tweak to your device, but the psychological effects of a more circular screen may help you feel more connected, safe, and, well…perfect. If you're the type that prefers the logic, order, and security of a sharp-cornered screen, then stick with your standard Android interface. Otherwise, keeping reading. The key to getting round corners on your screen is simple, and you do not need to be rooted. Just go ahead and download the free RoundR app from Google Play. The only permissions it requires is to draw over other apps and to run at startup.Once you first open the app, it'll automatically turn on to the standard 10dp radius, but you can adjust it anywhere from 2 to 60. You can also choose whether to start the app on boot and toggle app notifications on and off. You can even select which corners of your screen you want rounded off, just in case you want to feel both safe and secure. With the latest update, you can now also have rounded corners overlap your lockscreen and notifications, and you can have it overlap your status bar instead of below your status bar. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Of course, there will always be apps where you don't want your corners rounded, like maybe when you're watching Netflix or YouTube. Unless you want that old school boob tube look. If not, just slide down your notifications drawer and tap on Rounded Corners to turn it off real quick. It's so freaking simple, I love it. Regardless of your device's color, the screen is surrounded by a pitch black border, and the corners of the image rarely touch it. So, RoundR just places one, two, three, or four small overlays at the corners to simulate the round look. I think the new round-cornered screen pairs well with the round corners of the GS3 device itself, don't you? RoundR works with most Android devices (not just the GS3!) running 2.1 or newer and takes up less than 60 kilobytes of space. How awesome is that?

How To: Replace Your Samsung Galaxy S4's Home Button with Customizable Swipe Gestures

How To: Replace Your Samsung Galaxy S4's Home Button with Customizable Swipe Gestures
Like the buttons on your computer's mouse and keyboard, the Home key on your Samsung Galaxy S4 serves a vital function in navigating through your device. It can get pressed dozens of times a day, going through hours of use and abuse. If the GS4's Home button is anything like the GS3's, which was stress-tested for 200,000 presses, you may not have anything to worry about. But circumstances beyond our control can leave us with sticky, loud-clicking, or otherwise faulty Home buttons. If you have a broken Home button and don't want to shell out for a replacement, or simply want to alleviate some of the everyday stress the Home button goes through, then developer Philip Ma has an app just for you.Aptly named Swipe Home Button allows you to emulate a Home button press with simple swipe gestures. This is a quick and easy softMod to do and can potentially extend the life of your Galaxy S4's Home button. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Getting StartedSwipe Home Button is available for free from the Google Play Store. The download is barely over 50 kilobytes, leaving just a tiny footprint on your phone. Once installed, open it up to check out all the settings. In order for the app to run, make sure the box next to Enable gestures is checked. Also make sure Start at boot is checked, unless you want to have to manually start the app every time your GS4 turns on.

Setting Up Your Swipe GesturesFrom the app's main menu, tap Binding to assign actions to the seven different swipe gestures the app supports. You can also tap Instructions to find out how the gestures are supposed to be done. To assign an action, just tap on the gesture you want to use, which brings up the Choose an action dialog box. Remember, there are three actions that your Galaxy S4's Home button performs:Bring you to your home screen (single tap). Pull up the Task Manager (long-press). Open either Google Now or S-Voice voice search, whichever you have set as default (double-tap). There are already a few pre-assigned gestures. By default, the Swipe up gesture is set as your Home button, and the Swipe left down gesture is set to Show recent apps. You can change or re-assign the gestures however you see fit, but I like these two gestures because they allow for easy one-handed use. Those take care of the first two of your GS4's Home button actions. What about double-tapping for voice search? There's no action for the double-tap, but what you can do is set up a gesture to directly launch a voice search app. From the Binding menu, choose a gesture, select Custom app, and select the voice search app of your choice. Google Now will be listed as Voice Search with the blue and white microphone logo, or you can choose Samsung's S Voice. Now you have all the functionality of your GS4's Home button replaced with gestures!

Hiding App NotificationsThe app makes its presence known in your Status bar and Notification tray. If you don't want it cluttering up your notifications, it's pretty easy. To get rid of the icon in your Status bar, simply go to the app's main menu and check the box next to Transparent notification icon. As for the ongoing notification, you'll have to venture into your GS4's System Settings. Under More, select Application manager. Locate Swipe Home Button and un-check the box next to Show notifications. No more clutter in your Notification tray!Have any questions or comments about this app? Know of any other fixes for a broken Home button? Feel free to leave them in the discussion section below.

How To: No Data, No ProblemUse SMS to Connect to Your Favorite Web Services on Android

How To: No Data, No ProblemUse SMS to Connect to Your Favorite Web Services on Android
Recently, a group of Duke University students got together to tackle an age-old problem with mobile devices. You see, mobile data coverage isn't exactly ubiquitous, and many folks have restrictive mobile data plans, which means internet connectivity is not always an option. The end result of their work is an app that allows you to connect to web services such as Google Search, Maps, Twitter, Wikipedia, and the like, using nothing more than SMS messages. So even if your mobile data connection is spotty or nearing its monthly cap, you'll always be able to connect to the services you need. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install SMSmartTo begin, search for and install SMSmart on the Google Play Store. It's a free app, so the only monetary concern would be your SMS usage if you're on a pay-per-message type of plan.

Step 2: Sign Up for an AccountWhen you first launch SMSmart, you'll be asked to enter your email address. So take care of that, then press "OK" at the bottom of the screen. From here, press "OK" again, then SMSmart will send you a series of text messages.

Step 3: Turn Off Data Transmission NotificationsAs the app explains, the phone numbers that just sent you text messages are the same numbers that will be used to transmit data. So to avoid a barrage of new messages each time you use this app, the developers recommend that you disable notifications from these numbers. This process will vary depending on the SMS app you use. For most clients, just select the SMSmart text messages from within your SMS app, then press "Block," "Mute," or "Turn notifications off."

Step 4: Access Web Services via SMSWith initial setup now out of the way, you're ready to access web services with your phone's SMS connection. Standard carrier rates will still apply, of course, but most U.S.-based providers offer unlimited SMS messages. To begin, select a service from SMSmart's main menu. The search function, for instance, will return Google search results almost instantly, but note that these links aren't clickable, since most websites are too large to transmit over SMS. Beyond search, there are options for maps, news, stocks, Twitter, and Wikipedia. Data from each of these services will be transmitted over SMS, so no mobile data is used. Do you plan on using SMSmart to avoid mobile data overages, or is it more of a "just in case" app for when your data connection is spotty? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Dual-Boot Multiple ROMs on Your Nexus 6

How To: Dual-Boot Multiple ROMs on Your Nexus 6
Desktop users have taken advantage of dual-booting operating systems for decades now. If your core system software is lacking in any regard, dual-booting a secondary OS can give you access to those features that you're missing out on.When it comes to Android devices, there's only one real dual-boot solution: developer Vojtech Bocek's MultiROM (unless, of course, you joined us for some Android and iOS April Fool's Day fun). The developer has finally brought his mod over to the Nexus 6, so if you've ever wanted to try a custom ROM without losing the stability of stock, you can now do so. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Getting StartedBefore you install MultiROM on your Nexus 6, there are a few things you should be aware of. First and foremost, you'll need to be rooted with a custom recovery installed and Unknown Sources enabled to get this one going.Beyond that, the ROM or firmware your Nexus 6 is currently running will need to support either the stock Nexus 6 kernel, or CyanogenMod's CAF kernel. This is because MultiROM requires a modified kernel to run, and for now, support is limited to just these two options. Luckily, though, almost all ROMs for the Nexus 6 support one of these two kernels. If you're running the stock firmware, CyanogenMod, or any AOSP-based custom ROM, you'll be fine. You should also be aware that if you haven't disabled forced encryption on your Nexus 6, you will have to enter a password when booting into any of your ROMs. If you haven't set up lock screen security on your device, "default-password" will be the password. If you have lock screen security enabled and your Nexus 6 is still encrypted, your boot password will be the same as your lock screen password. Since MultiROM's boot manager interface is rather basic, a pattern-style lock screen will cause issues. As such, I'd recommend that you set your lock screen security up with either a password or PIN, since this will be much easier to enter when booting into one of your ROMs.

Step 1: Download MultiROM ManagerNow that you've learned the basics, you're ready to get started. First up, point your Nexus 6's web browser to this link to download the latest test version of the MultiROM Manager app. When that's finished, tap the Download Complete notification to launch the installer file. From here, press "Install," and when that's finished, tap "Open."

Step 2: Enable Test Build Options in MultiROMWhen you first launch MultiROM Manager, the app will ask for Superuser access, so tap "Grant" on the popup. At this point, you'll be taken to the app's main menu, and after a brief scan, MultiROM manager should report that you don't have the necessary patches installed yet and that none are available for download. This is because support for the Nexus 6 is still in its testing phases at the moment, so the default settings in MultiROM Manager will need to be changed. Tap the three-dot menu button, then head to "Settings" to take care of this issue. From here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap the "Version" entry 7 times in rapid succession. After doing this, you'll get a toast message informing you that you've enabled a set of developer options. So scroll down a bit further to see these new options, and tick the box next to "Override manifest URL." Next, tap the "Manifest URL" entry. From here, add "-test" directly after the "multirom" portion of the address, then press "OK." The URL should now read "http://tasemnice.eu/multirom-test/manifest.json."

Step 3: Install the MultiROM ModNext, head back to MultiROM Manager's main menu, then tap the refresh button at the top of the screen. At this point, you should see a new "Install/Update" card. Make sure all 3 options on this card are selected, and verify that the "Kernel" entry matches your current ROM. Next, tap the "Install" button, then MultiROM Manager will begin applying its various patches. When that's finished, MultiROM Manager will inform you that it needs to boot your phone into custom recovery to apply its last few set of patches. Tap "Reboot" on this message, then an automated script will run and your phone will reboot. When you get back up, verify that the patches were installed properly by running MultiROM Manager again—if the "Status" card has no red text, then you're good to go.

Step 4: Flash a Secondary ROMNow that you've got the MultiROM patches applied to your system, you can install a secondary ROM. Don't worry, though, your primary ROM will continue to function as normal. To begin, download all required flashable ZIPs for your secondary ROM. In most cases, this will include the base ROM files and an additional Gapps package. When the files are all saved to your device, boot your phone into custom recovery mode. From here, tap the "Advanced" button, then select the "MultiROM" option. Next, tap "Add ROM," then make sure that "Android" and "Internal Storage" are selected and press "Next." From here, choose "ZIP File," then browse and select the main ZIP for your ROM. After that, swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to install your secondary ROM. If you need to flash a Gapps package, tap the "Home" button when the process has finished. Next, head back to the MultiROM menu again (Advanced -> MultiROM). This time, choose "List ROMs," then select the ROM you just installed. From here, choose "Flash ZIP," then browse and select your Gapps package. Next, just swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to install your Gapps package, then tap "Reboot System" when the process has finished.

Step 5: Using the Boot ManagerFrom now on, you'll see a new boot menu when starting your phone up. If you don't interact with this menu, your primary ROM will start up automatically. To boot into a secondary ROM, tap the "Cancel" button when you see this menu. From here, tap your secondary ROM twice, and it will boot right up. You can actually install more than just two ROMs using MultiROM by repeating Step 4 in this tutorial. What ROMs have you installed on your phone using MultiROM? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Get Android N's Redesigned Settings Menu on Your Android Right Now
When Android N is officially released sometime later this year, it will bring a lot of cool new features along with it. We've already had the chance to play around with some of these, thanks to a preview build available to Android beta testers, and one change that we like in particular is a revamped Settings menu. Among other things, each settings entry now has subtext beneath it that shows relevant info at a glance.Don't Miss: How to Sign Up for the Android Beta Program But the Android N preview is only available for newer Nexus devices, so for most folks, that means it will be a while before you can actually try it out. Luckily, though, developer MrWasdennnoch has created an Xposed module that will replicate features from Android N's Settings menu on older Android versions. So if you'd like to get a taste of things to come, I'll show you how to set it all up below. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Requirementsrooted Android device Xposed Framework installed "Unknown sources" enabled Android 5.0 or higher device running stock Android or an AOSP-based custom ROM

Step 1: Enable Beta Modules in XposedAs of this writing, the module that gives you Android N's Settings menu on older versions is still in its beta testing phases. As such, you'll need to set your Xposed Installer app to allow installation of beta modules. To begin, head to the Settings section in your Xposed Installer app, then tap the "Versions to be shown" entry. From here, use the pop-up menu to set this to "Beta," and you'll be all set.

Step 2: Install Android N-IfyNext, head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app and search for "Android N-ify," then tap the top result. From there, swipe over to the Versions tab, then hit the "Download" button next to the most recent entry. Within a few seconds, Android's installer interface should come up, so tap "Install" when you see this screen. Finally, once the module has been installed successfully, make sure to activate and reboot before proceeding.

Step 3: Check Out the Revamped Settings MenuAfter rebooting, no further setup is needed. Just open Android's Settings menu, and you'll notice the changes right away. Under each of the main categories, you'll see relevant bits of information about that entry—for instance, "Storage" will now tell you how much free space you have available without needing to enter the menu, and "Battery" will display the percentage remaining. This is just the first version of Android N-ify, and more cool Android N features are being worked on as we speak. For instance, the developer plans to implement a few of Android N's new multitasking tweaks, as well as its "Dark Mode" feature, and an improved Doze mode—so make sure to keep an eye out for updates to the module.Follow Android Hacks on Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter, for more Android tips and tricks.
