How To: Enable the Hidden Notification LED on Your Nexus 6
The Nexus 6 uses an Ambient Display notification system that was heavily inspired by the Active Display feature on the Moto X. Essentially, the device shows a black-and-white version of the lock screen whenever you receive a new notification or pick the phone up. This is all made possible by the N6's AMOLED display that doesn't have to waste any battery to power black pixels on the screen.But there are a few drawbacks to this system—most notably its predisposition to pocket dial your contacts when the phone misinterprets movement as someone picking it up. So many users have disabled the feature in Settings, but this leaves you without any notification indicator at all.Amazingly enough, though, there is a full RGB notification LED built into the phablet—it's just not in use. Hidden under the device's top speaker, this LED light can be activated for use in alerting you to missed notifications as long as you're rooted. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Light FlowAt the moment, the only app that is capable of unlocking this hidden LED light is the paid version of Reactle's app, Light Flow. The app will run you $2.49—about as much as a cheap cup of coffee—so consider that before proceeding.

Step 2: Enable Root OptionsBefore you can configure the various notification-specific options that Light Flow has to offer, you'll need to enable a few settings that are exclusive to rooted users. From Light Flow's side navigation menu, tap Settings, then Device Settings and Root. From here, tick the box next to Root Mode, then tap Grant on the Superuser Access request. Next up, enable the Run every command as root option, then tick the box next to Direct Mode and press Yes on the popup. Light Flow will close itself out after you enable Direct Mode, so you'll have to open it back up to finish setup.

Step 3: Configure Notification Option in Light FlowLight Flow's main purpose is to allow for app-specific notification control. This includes LED color and sound options, but these features require that you enable the app's Notification Access plugin.When you relaunch Light Flow after enabling the root options, you'll see a message asking you to enable this feature. Tap the Set Up button on this message, then tick the box next to Light Flow on the next screen and press OK on the popup. After backing out to Light Flow again, use the side navigation menu to head to Notification Settings. You'll be presented with a list of the apps installed on your system that most commonly post notifications. Each app can have its own notification settings like LED Color and Sound. If there's an app that you'd like to set up that's not already listed, tap the + button at the bottom of the screen to add it. Otherwise, use the three-dot menu button next to any app to select Settings, then swipe over to the Light tab. Some options are unavailable on the Nexus 6, but you can change the Notification Color option to fit your liking. If you'd like to test out an app's settings, tap the three-dot menu button at the top of the screen and press Test. Light Flow is not capable of making the LED light in the Nexus 6 blink intermittently, so the previously-hidden light will stay on until you dismiss the corresponding button. Step 3: Add Six Apps to Your DockThere are no settings or preferences to set up once the tweak is installed; just drag apps to your dock and enjoy. OLED vs. LCDOLED technology has found its way into consumer tech products more and more in recent years. If you were to walk into Best Buy right now, there's a good chance any given smartphone or TV you pick up would have an OLED display. But what is it, and is it better than LCD?To keep it simple, if your display is OLED, each pixel in the screen emits its own light. That means black portions of the screen don't need to be turned on at all, both saving power as well as achieving contrast other displays simply can't.LCD, on the other hand, requires an overall backlight, so even if you fill the screen with a solid black square, you'll still see light coming from the phone. XR Display vs. XS DisplaysLet's talk resolution. The XS has a resolution of 2436 x 1125, while the XS Max has a resolution of 2688 x 1242. These two displays have the same pixel density of 458 PPI, however, so effectively, these displays are equally sharp.The LCD on the XR, on the other hand, has a resolution of 1792 x 898 with a pixel density of 326 PPI, even though its display is four-tenths of an inch larger than the XS. If you were to hold these displays up against each other, you would be able to see that the XS or XS Max have sharper displays than the XR, OLED aside.In addition, the XS and XS Max have HDR — or high-dynamic-range — displays. HDR displays can take advantage of HDR content, which deliver deeper, more vibrant colors to your movies, TV shows, and even YouTube videos. The XR does not have an HDR display, so you'll be missing out on that extra perk.We can't compare brightness or color temperature between the displays yet, however, since Apple does not release that information to the public. Swipe down on the Status bar to reveal the Notification Shade. Along the top of the shade will be two options, "Audio output" and the name of your Bluetooth device. Select "Audio output" and choose either the second Bluetooth device (whether headphones or speakers) or your phone speakers.
Step 6: Enjoy 2 Videos ProperlyOpen up the app which you assigned in SoundAssistant to be the first audio device. Make it the first app in split-screen mode and choose the second app for video playback. Press play on the video and then play on the second video. Both videos should play with each audio track directed toward a different audio source.Most of the time, you will probably never need this feature. Tap this button to start enabling swipe gestures.At this point, the app will ask you to enable its accessibility service. So tap the message at the bottom of the screen, select "All in One Gestures" from the list, then enable the switch at the top of the subsequent menu. Step 3: Enable the Home Button Swipe GestureSince we are trying to emulate a swipe up gesture, scroll down until you see the option for Bottom Area. In this menu, you will see a list of actions assignable to the gesture.Within this sub-menu, you will see options such as Application and Shortcuts, but our concern isn't with that right now. Ready to start rooting your Samsung Galaxy S4? For those of you with the GT-i9500 model GS4, this quick video will walk you through the entire rooting process using Odin and CWM. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1:Power off you Galaxy S4 and hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 5 seconds.
Step 2:When you see the warning screen, let go of all buttons then hit the Volume Up button to enter ODIN Download mode.
Step 3:Connect a micro-USB cable from your Galaxy S4 to your computer.
Step 4:Next, download CWM recovery for your Galaxy S4. ClockworkMod is currently available for GT-i9500, Sprint SPH-L720, and T-Mobile SGH-M919 models.Also download ODIN, Samsung USB Drivers, and SuperSU Zip files.
Step 5:Unzip ODIN and run the odin3 v1.85.exe file by double-clicking on it.If you see a yellow highlighted box like shown below, you are good to go, if not, double-click on the Samsung USB drivers EXE file you downloaded earlier and install drivers, then unplug/re-plug the micro-USB cable to your phone. You should see yellow highlighted box.Next, choose PDA, then browse to the CWM recovery you downloaded earlier for your Galaxy S4. Step 7:Next, after your phone reboots, copy the SuperSU zip file you downloaded earlier to anywhere on your Galaxy S4.
Step 8:Power off your Galaxy S4 then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together.
Step 9:When you see the Samsung logo, keep holding down Volume Up and Center Home buttons but let go of the Power button.
Step 10:Once in CWM Recovery, choose "install zip from sdcard" and hit the Power button.
Step 11:Choose "choose zip from sdcard" and hit the Power button.
Step 12:Choose "0/" directory and hit the Power button.
Step 13:Browse and find the SuperSU zip file you copied over earlier and hit the Power button.
Step 14:Choose "Yes" and hit the Power button.
Step 15:This will install su binaries and SuperSU superuser app on your phone. This essentially "roots" your Galaxy S4.
Step 16:Go back to main menu and choose "reboot system now", then hit Power button. Your Galaxy S4 will reboot.
Step 17:Once rebooted, you should find SuperSU app in your app drawer.
Step 18:Run the SuperSU app once and update the binaries.
Step 19:You can verify you have full root by downloading and opening rooted app like Titanium Backup app (which I highly recommend for backing up/freezing/un-installing your apps).You should see a Superuser request window pop-up!

Step 1: Install AirStreamThe app that will allow you to stream music and video from your cloud storage accounts is called AirStream, and it's available on the Google Play Store for free. Search it by name to get the app installed, or head directly to the install page at this link.

Step 2: Attach Your Cloud Storage AccountsWhen you first launch AirStream, the app will give you a quick demo. Tap "Get Started" here, then you'll be asked to attach your cloud storage accounts. Select any account to start this process by toggling the switch next to its entry. After that, use the next menu to log into your cloud storage account. Then, tap "OK" or "Allow" to grant AirStream access to this cloud account. Next, you can repeat this same process to attach any of your other cloud accounts. Once you've done that, hit "Next," then AirStream will offer to set up a local area network connection with your computer. Go ahead and tap "Remind me later" here.

Step 3: Stream Music & Videos from Your Cloud AccountsAt this point, you'll be taken to AirStream's main menu. From here, select the "Cloud" option, then choose any of your cloud accounts. From here, select any folder that contains music or video files, then tap a song or video to begin playback. After that, you can head over to the "Music" or "Video" tab to get a traditional media player interface that allows for skipping tracks and pausing playback. There's also an ongoing notification that will be present while you're playing media, so you can control playback from any screen. And maybe best of all, you can cast connect from the app to any number of cast-enabled devices, including Chromecast and Nexus Players.
