How To: Snag Hulu & Showtime with Spotify Premium for Just $5/Month

How To: Snag Hulu & Showtime with Spotify Premium for Just $5/Month

Media subscriptions are all the rage these days. Between Netflix, Apple Music, HBO Now, and countless more, your TV, movie, and music options have never been better. Unfortunately, all these choices weigh heavily on your wallet. So, when there's an opportunity to snag not just Spotify but Hulu and Showtime as well, all for just a tad bit over five dollars a month, how could you turn that down?Well, as it turns out, the plan can't be taken advantage of by everyone. The sad fact is, unless you're a registered college student, you won't qualify for the 3-in-1 discounted bundle. It's a smart move on Spotify's behalf since it wouldn't be able to afford to give the package to everyone for dirt cheap, but it still gives the appearance that it's willing to give people who are already on a tight budget a chance to enjoy life beyond the school books and exams. As of right now, the deal is even sweeter for college students. Spotify is running a promotion until June 30, 2019, where you can get the first three months of Spotify Premium for Students with Hulu and Showtime for just $0.99 each month plus tax. After that, it would be the standard $4.99 plus tax each month. The deal only applies to those who have never tried Spotify Premium before.Don't Miss: The Five Best Apps for Streaming Movies on Your Phone
How to Qualify for Spotify Premium for StudentsJust how stringent is this service? To qualify for Spotify's normally $4.99/month Spotify Premium plan for students, you need to be:a current higher education student enrolled at a US Title IV accredited college or university in the US at least 18 years old For those of you who are already a part of Spotify Premium for Students, you can switch to the bundled plan without any problems. If you already subscribe to Hulu's $5.99 plan, you can also switch to the bundled option, but your current Hulu subscription will last until the end of the billing cycle. The same goes for subscriptions with the Showtime app. More on this stuff later. If you don't meet any of these three requirements, you'll need to choose either the $9.99 Premium plan (which also offers the first three months for $0.99 each right now) — which does not feature Hulu or Showtime access — or the standard Spotify Free option.
What Information Do You Need to Sign Up?When you first join Spotify Premium for Students with Hulu and Showtime, you'll need to provide your name, email address, date of birth, and payment details, as well as the name of the valid educational institution. Other documents may be necessary to prove that you qualify. Then, Spotify will use SheerID, Inc. to verify your information.
What Happens When You Graduate?Spotify isn't stupid — it knows you won't be a student forever. To weed out anyone over-staying their welcome, the service requires students to reverify their accounts once every 12 months. If you no longer qualify for this service when it comes time for re-verification, you're out of luck.Unfortunately, if you go to a four-year college while using this deal, then head to graduate school, you won't be able to get the deal for all five or six years. Spotify only lets you take advantage of this discounted price for four activation periodsIf you used two activation periods (two years) of Spotify Premium for Students, then go on hiatus from school, you can still sign back up for the discounted service. You will not get an additional four discounted periods, but instead, an additional two, picking up where you left off.Spotify isn't clear when these re-verification tests take place, but they most likely come at the time of year you signed up for Spotify Premium for Students. If that's the case, your best shot is to sign up just before your school's general graduation date, or when you know your school ends its student eligibility. That way, Spotify will approve your account while you're still a student, allowing you to graduate with about a year left to use the service.Don't Miss: How to Change Spotify Playlist Pictures from Your Phone
Can You Watch Hulu & Showtime in the Spotify App?No. You'll need to download each app separately, then log in with the same credentials you do for Spotify.Install Hulu: Android | iOS (both free but subscription needed) Install SHOWTIME: Android | iOS (both free but subscription needed)
If You Already Subscribe to Hulu or ShowtimeWho wants to lose their watch lists, even for such a good deal?Current Hulu subscribers can transfer their account over to Spotify Premium for Students. Your Hulu plans needs to be the base tier ($5.99/month with limited commercials), without any Hulu add-ons, and with payments to Hulu directly rather than through a third-party service. Just use your current Hulu credentials when activating Hulu via the "Spotify Services" settings. Hulu recommends that you change your Hulu email address to the one registered with your Spotify account.Log in to your Spotify Premium for Students account. Go to your account page and under Account overview select Activate Hulu. You will be asked to switch to Spotify Premium for Students + Hulu and activate both your accounts By switching and activating both accounts through Spotify, you will no longer be billed by Hulu, and you will then be billed every month through your current Spotify billing method.
— HuluUnfortunately, current Showtime users cannot transfer their accounts over right away to Spotify Premium for Students. Showtime and Spotify recommend you cancel your recurring Showtime bill, then wait until the rest of the paid period expires. After that, you can re-attempt activation with your Showtime login credentials via the "Spotify Services" settings. This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' annual Movies & TV on Mobile special coverage. How To: Get Free Internet on Your Laptop from Your Phone

How To: Get Free Internet on Your Laptop from Your Phone

Tethering your Android phone basically turns it into a mobile hotspot, allowing you to funnel a 3G or 4G internet connection from your phone into your PC or laptop via USB. As you might expect, phone carriers brought the hammer down in an effort to stop users from getting around the fees they charge to normally allow you to do this.Luckily, the FCC has stepped in and has made Verizon stop its block on tethering apps. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile users are unfortunately unaffected by this ruling, but if you have a Verizon plan (or you think that your carrier won't find out, which is likely), here's how you can easily turn your phone into an internet hotspot.
Step 1: Activate USB DebuggingGo into your Android phone's menu and select Settings --> Applications --> Development. In that window, check the box that says USB Debugging.
Step 2: Download PdaNetGo to the Google Play marketplace (previously the Android Market) and run a search for PdaNet, or just click here. Download and install that app.On the PC or laptop you want to give internet access to, go to the PdaNet website and download the appropriate free PdaNet version for your operating system.Note: PdaNet is free, but limits secure browsing. You can purchase the full version right now for $15.95.

Step 3: Connect Your Phone to Your ComputerConnect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Then run the PdaNet app on your phone and choose Enable USB Tether. The app will begin running as a background service. On your computer, there will now be a small phone symbol in your system tray. Right-click on that and hit Connect to finish the tether. Image via androidauthority.com You should now have 3G or 4G internet access on your computer. Be careful how much data you use though, as your carrier may become suspicious if you are downloading an extreme amount.
PdaNet on the iPhone? If you want to use PdaNet on your iPhone, you're going to have to jailbreak the device, since Apple hasn't allowed PdaNet into the iTunes App Store because it "avoids your carrier's tether plan". But now thanks to the FCC's ruling, it might finally make an appearance.

How To: Use Pinterest & Tumblr to Find Your Next Great Job

How To: Use Pinterest & Tumblr to Find Your Next Great Job
If you've ever searched for a new job online, chances are you've been completely overwhelmed by the process. Clicking through pages and pages of semi-relevant job postings, sending out hundreds of emailed résumés, and filling out applications is tiresome and dull. Now, thanks to social media, the job hunt doesn't have to bore you, and I'm not just talking about LinkedIn, the social media site designed specifically for job hunting. I'm talking about Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and even Tumblr. These sites aren't just for procrastinating and over-sharing; they can actually land you your next job. And the two I want to focus on in this guide are Pinterest and Tumblr, which both offer a variety of unique job opportunities—you just have to know how to find them.

Pinterest: Pin Your Way to Your Next JobIf your Pinterest feed is anything like mine, you're greeted with images of mouthwatering food every time you visit the homepage. In the midst of these recipes, jobs are hiding. Turn your daily browsing into a quick job search with these tips. Image via Frugal Mama
Tip #1. Procrastinate a LittleIt's easy to lose yourself in the multitude of pins when scanning the site. Yet in the midst of all those delicious recipes and DIY costumes, job opportunities are waiting—you just have to find them.Spend time each day to scour the pins of your favorite companies' accounts. You might discover that the event planning blog you follow religiously is hiring writers, or that your favorite movie studio is looking for interns. Some of these jobs may even be Pinterest-exclusive postings, which means you might face less competition.

Tip #2. Create a Living RésuméPinterest is a visual site. If a pin doesn't come with a beautiful, eye-catching image, no one will click on it. In order to attract others to your accomplishments, create a résumé that stuns both visually and skill-wise. Turn your Pinterest account into a résumé by offering companies the chance to check out what you've done. Turn a Pinterest board into an online resume. Image via Rachael King Post links to your published articles, or websites you've designed. Pin information about conferences you've spoken at, or events you've managed. Rachael King offers a great example of a Pinterest-board-turned-résumé. It's easy to highlight your career accomplishments by creating boards focused on your different areas of expertise. Within these boards, you can pin exactly what you want employers to see.
Tip #3. Build a FollowingIf you're a creative person looking for jobs in an artistic field, put Pinterest to work by using it to showcase your innovation. Your account should reflect the job you want: if you're an aspiring chef, fill your boards with recipes and images of culinary masterpieces made by you. Interested in fashion design? Post images of sketches, designs you admire, or even your unique daily outfits.Showing the online world what you're best at will draw companies in as they check out your social media presence.

Tip #4. Follow Well-Known Job Search SitesThese days, it seems like everyone is on Pinterest—and that includes job search sites. Follow a variety of job search sites, and you'll receive daily updates about potential jobs right on your newsfeed. Rather than heading straight to Indeed, Monster, or any of your other job-hunting favorites, you can log into Pinterest and view opportunities in an appealing way. This will also allow you to see jobs that you might miss when browsing the thousands and thousands that appear in a typical on-site search.

Tumblr: Tumble Around for Your Next GigTumblr is home to countless blogs about every subject imaginable. Yet it's also a place that offers up interesting job opportunities—if you know how to seek them out. Learn how to filter through the site to find the users and information that can benefit your career.

Tip #1. Search for What You WantThis may sound like an obvious tip, but it's one that works: use Tumblr's search bar to find job openings. Type in terms that fit what you're looking for, such as "hiring" and "jobs". These words and terms will turn up posts and entire blogs dedicated to the job search.Of course, you'll also discover a ton of posts about users' jobs and their personal lives, so you might want to filter your search by using terms specific to your industry. For example, searching for "freelance writing job" turned up four opportunities within the first page of hits.
Tip #2. Start TumblingFinding the perfect job can be as easy as cultivating your tumblr. Most tumblr pages are full of funny memes, cute cats, or personal pictures. Your account should be based on things you enjoy, but keep the cats to a minimum. Post images or blurbs that relate to who you are.Do you have a knack for making memes? Are you skilled at sassy TV recaps? If you can show potential employers that you know what the Internet wants, you'll be a valuable catch. Who knows—your tumblr could become the next Hipster Puppies or What Should We Call Me.Start filling that thing up with what makes you happy, and make a name for yourself online.

Tip #3. Put Together a PortfolioWhile Pinterest users should pin their career milestones, Tumblr fans should turn their page into an innovative résumé. Forget boring blurbs about how great you are at taking meeting minutes; turn each of your previous job experiences into a post. Image via Chelli Reyes Include pictures, infographics, or examples of your work to turn a short-form blog into a live résumé, like the one above by Chelli Reyes. Now that you know how to turn your favorite social media sites into job searching machines, start mixing a little business with your pleasure. Mix up your job hunt and utilize the sites you enjoy spending time on—just remember not to pin any cookie recipes to your career board.

News: Major Google Maps Update Brings Uber Integration, New Navigation, & More

News: Major Google Maps Update Brings Uber Integration, New Navigation, & More
This week, Google sidestepped their usual "Update Wednesday" strategy by dropping a huge update to their Maps app for both Android and iOS. We're accustomed to seeing new features and bug fixes to their stable of apps on Wednesdays, but today's Maps update was presumably big enough to get its own release day (it's Tuesday, folks).Today's bump up to version 8.0.0 (Android) and 3.0.0 (iOS) brings some impressive features, along with the usual bug fixes:

Uber Car Service IntegrationIf you have the Uber app installed, Google Maps will now make it much easier to skip the walk or bus ride in order to get to your location. Search for a location and choose either transit or pedestrian route methods, then scroll to the bottom of the route options. Hit the Get an Uber option to launch directly into the app and set a pickup location. Google's integration makes this a seamless process (as long as you've already signed in to the Uber app), and it's clear they've chosen their winning horse in the Lyft versus Uber race.

An Updated Navigation Look & FeelOnce you've got a destination set and hit the Start navigation button, you'll notice some changes off the bat.Old Maps on the left, new Maps on the right Next turn indicators are on the right side (along with the compass), and new lane indicators adorn the bottom right of the screen. Additionally, all destination estimates are joined together along the bottom, showcasing the ETA, distance, and estimated arrival time (old version required a tap-through to see each metric).Hit the three-dot menu key along the bottom panel to check out the updated menu. A more visual selection replaces the old list, and a new Alternate routes option is available to show not only the various other routes on a map, but their estimated ETAs. You may have noticed that "Route preview" is missing from the new version, but fret not, you simply have to tap or drag up from the bottom panel.

Easier Offline MapsNow when you search a location, you'll have the option to easily save that Map for offline use (or when you have a slow connection), which is a lot easier than previous methods for saving offline maps. Simply scroll to the bottom of the search page, tap Save map to use offline. From the following screen, you can adjust angles (pan) and zoom, then just hit the Save button on the bottom.
Other Features Added to Google MapsAlong with the big additions above, you can also see total walking time for trips when using transit results, as well as the next scheduled bus or train. And if you've recently saved or search-for a place, you'll see a "Places to review" list once you've signed into the app. Finally, search filters, like price ratings and hours of operation, are new enabled for places.Overall, this is a big update, and you need to grab it. Even if you're in an area without Uber service, the new navigation screen and offline maps capabilities are more than enough to warrant a download.Update not hit your device yet? If you're an Android user, grab the app directly here (just make sure you have "Unknown sources" enabled in your device's Security settings). iOS users, just keep refreshing!

How To: Play Metal Gear Solid & Other Game Boy Color Games on Your Samsung Galaxy S3

How To: Play Metal Gear Solid & Other Game Boy Color Games on Your Samsung Galaxy S3
If playing Metal Gear Solid didn't make you want to crawl on the floor of your living room throwing imaginary flash grenades, then I don't think we could be friends. Solid Snake was the man. Period.Metal Gear has advanced in age and complexity over the years, becoming one of the most beloved franchises ever released, but one of my favorite versions was the Metal Gear Solid on the Game Boy Color. But who still uses their old GBC in this world of smartphones? For a better way to step into the shoes of Solid Snake again, use your Samsung Galaxy S3 instead. All you need to play old Game Boy Color games is the right emulator and your a game ROM file. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download a GBC EmulatorTo play Game Boy Color games on the GS3, you'll need to download and install Gameboy Color A.D. from the Google Play Store. It's a completely free emulator by BSlapps that lets you play any old Game Boy Color ROM you want.
Step 2: Finding Your ROMNow, like any emulator out there, Gameboy Color A.D. does not come with any games on it, so you'll need to find some ROMs online. Just do a quick search on Google for "Game Boy Color ROM" and you'll find a bunch of game titles available. When you find the one you want (a .ZIP file works best), just download it directly on your GS3.
Legality of Downloading ROMsROMs are basically games in pure data form, so unless you already own the titles you want to download, I can't advise you to download them. It's kind of a gray area, and technically anyone can download a ROM, but just make sure you know that it may or may not be okay.

Step 3: Loading Your GBA GamesOpen up Gameboy Color A.D. and you should be taken to a Load game screen. You'll need to locate your ROM(s) and load it.

Step 4: Play! You can play games horizontally or vertically if you want the original GBC look. Just beware—if you switch orientation during gameplay, your game may restart. At least that was the case with Metal Gear Solid. And that's all there is to it. For more old-school gaming options on your GS3, check out our other softModder guides.

How To: See the Notifications You Cleared by Accident

How To: See the Notifications You Cleared by Accident
If you've ever prematurely dismissed all of your push notifications before you got a chance to read each one, you know how annoying it can be to dig through all of your apps to try and find the one with the missed notification.Android does have a built-in notification history you can check out, but every time your device restarts your history is cleared. It also doesn't show the full notification, so you're left wondering what exactly it was.Luckily, developer cylonu87 has a new app that will make sure you never miss another app notification again, because it keeps detailed logs of all notifications indefinitely, and even lets you export your notification history to be viewed on another device or ROM.

Step 1: Install Notifications LoggerThe app that keeps track of all your past notifications is called Notifications Logger, but it's not available on the Google Play Store as of this writing. As a result, you'll need to be set up for sideloading apps.As long as you've got that taken care of, simply tap the following link from your Android device to grab a copy of the APK. Then, when the file is saved to your device, tap the "Download complete" notification and press "Install" when prompted.Download Notifications Logger (.apk) You can also install the app from the Galaxy App Store (search by name) on Samsung devices or on the Amazon AppStore.

Step 2: Grant Notification AccessOnce you've got the app installed, go ahead and launch it. On first run, you'll be prompted to set up additional permissions so that the app can access your notifications and keep a running log. This next part will differ depending on your Android version—4.2 or lower requires enabling an accessibility service, while 4.3 or higher only needs notification access enabled. So to start, tap "OK" on the popup in Notifications Logger, then select either the Notification access or Accessibility option depending on your Android version. From here, the rest will be just about the same regardless of what Android version you're running. So enable the "Notifications Logger" option on the following screen, then press "Allow" on the ensuing popup.

Step 3: View Past Notifications in DetailAt this point, Notifications Logger is all set up and ready to go—but it won't show any notification history until you get some new notifications. So to test out the app, let a few notifications accumulate, then tap the refresh button at the top of the main menu. From here, you'll see a listing of all the notifications you've received since you installed Notifications Logger, which are ordered by most recent and categorized by the app that posted them. If you'd like to see more detailed information about a specific notification, just tap the entry in the main menu and you'll be shown the entire contents of all notifications that were posted by a given app. The only downside is that you can't tap on a specific notification to open it.

Step 4: Block Notifications from Certain Apps (Optional)If you decide that you don't want to have a log of the notifications posted by a certain app, it's easy to setup a blacklist. To begin, tap the three-dot menu button at the top of the screen, then choose "Log notifications." From here, select the "Apps" option, then you'll see a popup with all your installed apps. Simply select any apps from this list whose notifications you don't wish to see, then press "OK," and those particular notifications will no longer be logged.

Step 5: Backup & Restore Notification Logs (Optional)Another interesting aspect of Notifications Logger is that it can export your notification history to be viewed on another device or ROM. If you'd like to try this out, simply tap the three-dot menu button and choose "Backup," then copy the log file in the Notifications Logger folder on your SD card to another device. From there, simply install the same app on the second device, then choose the "Restore" option to get your notification history back. Are you enjoying the peace of mind that comes with knowing you'll never miss another important notification again? If so, tell us about it in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or on Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

Siri 101: How to Completely Turn Off Siri on Your iPhone

Siri 101: How to Completely Turn Off Siri on Your iPhone
Not everyone digs Siri. Some of you probably can't live without the personal assistant on your iPhone, and some of you probably never even use it — and likely never will. If you fall into the latter category of iPhone users, you can simply disable the feature altogether, which will prevent accidentally triggering her or him anymore and will keep your iPhone nice and secure overall. The instructions for disabling Siri altogether are slightly different in iOS 10 and iOS 11 and higher, so I'll cover both ways below. Also worth noting is that in iOS 9 and under, after disabling the Siri Home button shortcut, it would automatically be replaced by a similar feature called "Voice Control," which is more of a utility for getting things done and less of a sassy, back-talking virtual assistant. However, in iOS 10 and higher, you will have to enable Voice Control manually via Settings –> General –> Accessibility –> Home Button.Don't Miss: How to Disable Siri Only on Your iPhone's Lock Screen

How to Disable Siri in iOS 10To disable Siri on your iPhone running iOS 10, simply go to Settings –> Siri, then simply toggle off "Siri" at the top of the list. You'll be prompted to "Turn Off Siri" with the following warning. The information Siri uses to respond to your requests will be removed from Apple servers. If you want to use Siri later, it will take some time to re-send this information. If you haven't really been using Siri to begin with, this shouldn't matter one bit to you. So tap on "Turn Off Siri" and the long-press Home button shortcut, as well as the "Hey Siri" option, will be gone.

How to Disable Siri in iOS 11 & iOS 12If you have iOS 11 or iOS 12 running on your iPhone, then the process is slightly different. Go to Settings –> Siri & Search, then toggle off both "Listen for 'Hey Siri'" and "Press for Siri." Both must be turned off. Afterward, you'll be prompted to "Turn Off Siri" just like in iOS 10, except there's a warning that's worded slightly different:The information Siri uses to respond to your requests is also used for Dictation and will remain on Apple servers unless Dictation is also turned off.If that's okay with you, tap on "Turn Off Siri" to finalize it. Should you choose to do so, Dictation can be disabled via Settings –> General –> Keyboards, but this is actually a useful feature, so I'd recommend keeping it on. Also in the iOS 11 and iOS 12 settings, you'll see that Siri is also the culprit behind the suggestions that show up in search and using the "Look Up" feature that's available when you highlight text on the screen. If you'd like to turn that off too, you can from the Siri & Search settings page.Don't Miss: The 5 Best New Siri Features in iOS 11 for iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Get Windows 8.1 Today for Free

How To: Get Windows 8.1 Today for Free

Microsoft released a preview version of Windows 8.1 today, notably adding an updated Start screen, the ability to run several Windows 8 apps side by side in a number of configurations, fully integrated search, better HiDPI support for multiple monitors, and for those who miss it, options to bring back the Start button or boot straight to the desktop. The good news is, you don't have to be a developer to get it! You just have to be running Windows 8 or Windows RT on your device. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.Images via microsoft.com

Step 1: Download & Install the Preview UpdateJust head over to Microsoft's Download Windows 8.1 Preview page and click Get the Update. If you're currently viewing the page with a Mac, you'll get a message about ISO files instead. Image via wonderhowto.com Note: If you're running an enterprise version of Windows, you'll have to go get the ISO file from MSDN and burn a DVD to install the Windows update. If you don't have access to MSDN downloads, contact your system administrator, or whoever installed or gave you your copy of Windows 8 Enterprise Edition. This will download a small file that'll update your Windows Store app to let you download the full update. This process is pretty quick, as you can see in the gallery below, but don't be fooled—it's not the full Windows 8.1 update (at least, not yet).
Step 2: RebootAfter a quick reboot, your PC will be ready to install the Windows 8.1 Preview.Note: You are not running Windows 8.1 yet at this point. You've just made sure your computer is able to access the Preview from the Windows Store app before anyone else.

Step 3: Download Windows 8.1 from the Windows App StoreHead to your Start menu and launch the Store app. You can't possibly miss the giant new Update Windows option. Give that a tap, and tap download to start the process. This will be a monster of a file coming in at 2.4GB, so it may take a few hours to download depending on your internet connection speed.
Step 4: Surf WonderHowToYou've got some time to kill while it's downloading and installing, and somehow this major update has been built to install in the background without hogging your whole PC. Why not learn some new skills while you're waiting? You'll see a toast notification fly in once the initial download completes, but you can just ignore it as it'll silently continue installing in the background.
Step 5: Reboot AgainThis reboot will take a little while as it finishes installing all the updates. Go outside. Stretch. Maybe use some of the new skills you learned from the last step. Come back in 10-20 minutes.
Step 6: You're Done!Go through the setup wizard to activate the new auto-update features, and link your Microsoft account. Your PC will now re-download all your Store apps, giving you an early preview of the much improved Music app, and ensuring that any apps implementing new Windows 8.1 functionality will work properly.
A Warning to Windows RT UsersOnce you upgrade, you can't go back. Windows 8 users can always reinstall Windows, but given the locked-down nature of Windows RT, this update is permanent. Just make sure you're certain before you take the plunge.
TroubleshootingKeep in mind, this is an early preview. It will be buggy. If you're not comfortable running pre-release software, you shouldn't try it just yet.If you decide to take the plunge and you end up running into trouble along the way, check out the Microsoft Windows 8.1 Preview FAQ.Notably, if your PC has an Intel Atom processor, you won't be able to try the preview just yet as its graphics drivers haven't been updated yet.If your issue isn't covered in the FAQ, you can post your questions in the comments below, or hit up the Windows 8.1 Support Forum which will get you in touch with others having similar problems, and experts who've figured out how to fix them.

How To: Root & Gain Superuser Access on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 Using a Mac (The Easy Way)

How To: Root & Gain Superuser Access on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 Using a Mac (The Easy Way)
To really customize your Samsung Galaxy S3, you'll need to be rooted, because most of the coolest mods and hacks require root access. If you haven't rooted yet, you're just barely touching the surface of what your GS3 can do for you. However, if you've never rooted before, it can be pretty intimidating. As far as instructions goes, there's plenty available, like Danny's guide on using ODIN for Windows or the easy CASUAL method that Faisal provided. There's only one problem. If you're like me and mostly use a Mac, it's not as easy, since most rooting guides use Windows. The CASUAL method does supposedly support Macs, but I initially tried that with no success. I did find another way, though, and that's what I'm going to show you right now.Update: We've recently found what has got to be the easiest root method ever. No cords, no computers—just download one app directly to your S3, regardless of carrier, and you'll be rooted in less than a minute. Check out the guide here. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Download Motochopper on Your MacTo gain root, we'll be using Motochopper, so go ahead and download it and save it to your Mac's desktop.

Step 2: Enable USB Debugging on Your GS3Now, on your GS3, you'll need to enable USB Debugging so we can connect the device to the Mac. You can do this by going to Menu -> Settings -> Developer Options and make Developer Options is turned ON (if not already). Then make sure the box next to USB Debugging is checked. If you do not see Developer Options at first, go to About device and tap on Build number until it says You are now a developer. Then you'll have access to the Developer Options.
Step 3: Make Sure Your Have a Password on Your MacNow that you have Developer Options and USB Debugging turned on, you can connect your device to your Mac. If you do not have a password for your computer, you must set one up before proceeding. You'll need this password to root your phone, plus you should have a password on your computer anyway.

Step 4: Open Up Terminal on Your MacOpen a Terminal window and type in each of the following commands individually followed by the Enter (Return) key—one after the other:cd Desktop cd motochopper chmod 755 * sudo sh run.sh When you press Enter on that last command, you'll see the warning pictured above, and then will need to enter in your password. Do so and press Enter afterward.

This Is Where Motochopper Comes InAfter you submitted your admin password, Motochopper will begin running the exploit. It should look like so:

Step 5: Root Your GS3 with Motochopper on Your MacWhen it finishes loading the initial Motochopper dialog screen, press Enter once more to root your GS3. This process should take maybe one or two minutes. Once completed, press Enter (last time, I swear) and your GS3 should automatically reboot.

Step 6: Become a SuperuserIf your root was successful, you should see the Superuser icon on your home screen and in the app drawer. To make sure everything is legit, go to the Google Play Store and try a root-friendly app like Internet Speed Master. If it gives a Superuser request, then all is well. You have just rooted your Samsung Galaxy S3.

BONUS TIP: Transferring Files on Your MacWhile you can transfer photos by connecting your device via the USB cord, it's unnecessarily complicated on a Mac. You'll need to pull down the Notification tray and select the USB options under Ongoing, and then select Camera (PTP). Now, unplug and plug your device back in. Apple's iPhoto—or whatever photo manager you have defaulted—will open up. Now, if you want to transfer files and media (Media device MTP), you will need to download Android File Transfer (AFT). Once downloaded, drag it to your Applications folder, as you would any other Mac app. Open up AFT from the Applications menu and connect your device. Or, connect your device and open up AFT. It doesn't matter. Click on Get started and you should finally see all of your GS3's files and folders. Now you can easily drag and drop files from your GS3 onto your Mac, or vice versa.
That's ItHope this guide helped you out. If you ran into any problems, be sure to ask below in the comments, or hit up the GS3 softModder forum for help.

How To: Always Forgetting Things? This App Gives Reminders Every Time You Pick Up Your iPhone

There's nothing worse than that feeling when you realize you've forgotten something important. Maybe you left an assignment sitting on your desk at home, or forgot to log out of your accounts on the shared family computer.A new app called B4iGo wants to make sure you never leave without feeding the cat again by being as annoying as possible so you can't possibly forget. It lets you set alerts for important tasks and reminds you of them every time you pick up your phone to use it. Images via apple.com It lets you save multiple reminders and choose a custom notification or even record your own voice or sounds. The app senses the movement when you pick up your phone, then displays the reminder you choose. Images via apple.com When a reminder pops up, you can dismiss it by tapping Stop or see the rest of the message by tapping Show. Check out the video to see how it works. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
If being reminded every time you touch your phone sounds like overkill, you can also use Apple's stock Reminders app to set time- or location-based notifications. Once you've created a reminder, tap on it to open up the settings, then tap Remind Me and select the date, time, or location you'd like it to send you a push notification. But, if you're like me, you set reminders, then dismiss them and promptly forget about them as soon as they go off, so B4iGo might be a better bet for those who are forgetful or like to procrastinate. You can download the limited free version or pay $1.99 for the full one. What's your favorite reminder app? Let us know in the comments below.

How To: Block Popups in Safari on Your iPhone

How To: Block Popups in Safari on Your iPhone
Safari for iPhone is generally a good mobile browsing experience — except when it isn't. Popup ads are a real issue, and they cause both great annoyance as well as concern over iOS security. How do you stop these nuisances and return to a web without fear of popups?Through a combination of first- and third-party tools, you can arm your iPhone to fight against the scourge of unwelcome popup ads on the web. These options range from free to a mild expense, but all work towards the same goal — a clean, unobstructed view of the internet. The following is a list of exactly what you need to get there.Don't Miss: The 10 Best New Safari Features in iOS 11

Step 1: Enable 'Block Pop-Ups' in SafariWhile Safari can suffer greatly from popups, Apple doesn't hang their customers out to dry. There's a native setting for Safari to block popups, and while it might not be perfect, it's definitely a recommended first step in the war on popups. You might actually have this setting enabled by default. However, it's worth a check to be sure. To find the option, jump into your Settings app, then tap "Safari." Scroll down until you see "Block Pop-ups." Make sure the toggle is labeled green — that means it is enabled. If it isn't, just tap the slider.

Step 2: Install a Content BlockerWhile you should enable "Block Pop-ups" in Safari, that setting alone won't protect your device from intrusive messages on the web. What you need is a strong system in place to fight on your behalf. That's where content blockers come in.Content blockers allow you to browse the web on your iPhone without the worry of any external disturbances. In fact, not only do they manage to block popups, but content blockers will also block advertisements, auto-playing videos, and really anything that gets in the way of the information you're searching for.Content blockers range in application and in price. 1Blocker, for instance, is a popular choice that happens to be free to download, however also offers a $4.99 "premium" upgrade. Crystal, another good option, costs $0.99, but for a complete experience. Both apps work in the background, which allows you to use Safari as you normally would, albeit free from distraction.A third option that's completely free is Firefox Focus. It's both a Safari content blocker and a standalone browser, but for these purposes, you'd only need to use the content blocker aspect. To use any of these content blockers, start by installing the app. From there, open your Settings app, then scroll down and select "Safari." Next, select "Content Blockers," then enable the switch next to the app you just installed.

Step 3: Delete Configuration ProfilesThere are some apps that will download configuration profiles to your iPhone, potentially without your knowledge or at least without your full understanding of what they do. These profiles can plague your iPhone with malware and popups, which might not be stopped by Safari or content blockers. While Apple has cracked down on apps that install malicious configuration profiles, there are still apps that get through. You'll want to check and see if your iPhone has one of these profiles installed, as it could be the source of your popup headaches. To see for yourself, head into your Settings app, tap "General," then scroll down and tap "Profile." If a profile exists that you think shouldn't be there, you can tap on it here. Then, tap "Remove Profile." You will then need to enter your passcode and tap "Delete." Finally, restart your iPhone. If it's an iOS Beta Software Profile, you can keep that, as it's directly from Apple and used for developer and public beta testing. If it's a work iPhone, make sure to check with your employer first before attempting to uninstall any configuration profiles. Apple recommends you additionally delete the application that installed the profile in the first place. If the profile really is the cause of your popups, it might not be a bad idea.Don't Miss: 24 iOS 11 Privacy & Security Settings You Should Check Right NowFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
