You may have seen news reports over the last two days detailing a major security flaw in virtually all smartphones. The devices that are at risk are not limited to either iPhone or Android — all of us are affected. If you want to make sure your smartphone and its data stay secure, there are a few steps you can take.The two vulnerabilities at play here are called Meltdown and Spectre, and they're due to flaws in a very common mechanism used by processors. So a wide variety of electronic devices are at risk, and it doesn't matter what operating system you're running. What's important, however, is that you remain vigilant.
Meltdown & Spectre ExplainedDuring speculative execution, which is a mechanism many processors use to anticipate upcoming actions and speed up performance, the chips access multiple memory points at once to retrieve the proper resources.While this in itself is no cause for concern, researchers find that, occasionally, the act of speculative execution leaves data that should be protected open to potential access by intruders. In short, it's a hardware security issue, not software.However, since the code from all of your apps is filtered through your phone's processor, software is at the core of this issue. While no actual hacks using Spectre or Meltdown are known to exist for either iOS or Android at this point, if and when one is eventually created, it will use software to exploit the weaknesses in your processor's speculative execution mechanism.Since you can't update your device's hardware without buying a new phone, the best way to protect yourself against these threats is by keeping a tight rein on the apps and software that run on your phone.

While Google develops Android, it's also up to each OEM to stay on top of updates.Interestingly enough, it was Google who made the chip flaw discovery in the first place. The company planned to announce the security issue alongside Intel next week, but were forced to address it this week after reports surfaced.We have updated our systems and affected products to protect against this new type of attack. We also collaborated with hardware and software manufacturers across the industry to help protect their users and the broader web. These efforts have included collaborative analysis and the development of novel mitigations.Google claims that ARM-based Android devices with the latest security patches are protected. ARM released an official statement as well, which claims that the majority of ARM-designed processors are not at risk, only a handful are.However, in the affected category is the Cortex A73. These cores power the Snapdragon 835, which is featured in many of 2017's Android flagships, including the Galaxy S8, S8+, Note 8, OnePlus 5 and 5T, Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, and so many more. What You Can Do About ItNow that you know where things stand with your phone and these speculative execution exploits, there are a few best practices you can use to keep yourself safe. True, these are mostly common sense, but as long as you follow these instructions, you'll be as safe as you can be.
1. Accept All Security Patches & UpdatesThe most important thing anyone with a smartphone can do right now is keep their device fully updated. Your phone's OEM will be rushing to issue security patches now that these vulnerabilities have been discovered, and, according to the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, updating your software is your best defense against these chip flaws.Apple just released an update to the iOS 11.2.5 beta yesterday, while the company seeded the latest public update, 11.2.1, Dec. 13. While these updates do not explicitly address any of the discovered chip flaws, they do feature the latest security patches and bug fixes Apple has to offer.While Android does not share the same uniformity as iOS, Google claims its latest security patch covers ARM-based processor vulnerabilities. OEMs and carriers regularly release security patches, such as Wednesday's AT&T's S7 and S7 Edge patch, or T-Mobile's Note 8 patch last month. However, neither of these updates contain fixes for Meltdown and Spectre — it's the January 2018 security patches you need to look out for.Another issue here is that Spectre or Meltdown exploits aren't known to exist for mobile devices yet. This means that any security patches aiming to protect against these threats are mostly preemptive. Going forward, we may see mobile-targeted exploits using Spectre or Meltdown — if this happens, phone makers will likely need to issue another security patch to block that specific exploit.Bottom line, make sure your device is running the latest firmware it can. It's the best way to protect yourself, so take some time each day to check for updates.
2. Be Careful Which Apps You InstallIf a Spectre or Meltdown exploit is created that can actually hack a smartphone, chances are, it'll come in the form of an app. Since the security flaw is in your processor, and all apps are filtered through your processor as they run, it just takes one with the proper code to execute the exploit.Apple has recommended that iPhone users do not sideload apps — in other words, only install apps from the App Store, where Apple has had a chance to review their code. Of course, you have to go out of your way to sideload an app on iOS, so most users shouldn't have a problem here.The situation on Android is similar, but it's a lot easier to sideload apps on Google's OS, and there are a lot more unofficial app stores out there. No matter what you do, don't install random APKs you find on the internet — this is where most Android malware originates. Instead, only install apps from the Google Play Store, and even then, it would be a good idea to install an antivirus scanner to be extra safe.On either operating system, you should still be cautious when installing apps from your phone's official app store. Take time to read reviews and check into the app's developer — if there's anything fishy, resist temptation and don't install the app.
3. What to Do with Older DevicesThe sad fact is OEMs abandon products after a certain amount of time. If you are using a smartphone that no longer receives updates, you are leaving yourself open to vulnerabilities, both with the chip flaws as well as any others discovered.The best way to protect yourself is to buy a smartphone that is still supported by the manufacturer. Better yet, buy one designed with security in mind. Short of that, if you're running Android, you may want to look into installing a custom ROM, which is a community-built version of Android, typically with the latest security patches applied.Another thing to consider when shopping for Android phones is the OEM's track record with updates. If you don't want to find yourself in a similar situation in the future where your fairly-new phone isn't getting important updates to block security threats like these, you'll want to buy from a manufacture that's known for keeping their devices updated. One of the biggest under-the-hood changes in Android 5.0 is a new, robust Camera API. When Lollipop makes its official debut, this API will allow developers to hook into your phone's camera sensor like never before.Developer Chih-Mao Chen has already started taking advantage of this new API with his app, L Camera. It uses previously unavailable resources to allow for manual control of focus, exposure, and ISO sensitivity, and even offers a burst mode.But the killer feature here is an ability to record in nearly 4K video quality on the Nexus 5, a device that has been limited to 1080p recording in the past. And, even at a much higher resolution, L Camera still shoots video at a rate of 30 frames per second—so there's absolutely no downside here. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Installing "L Camera"L Camera is not on the Play Store just yet, so you'll have to download it separately. Point your Nexus 5's web browser to this link, then press OK on any file type warning messages—the installer file should begin downloading automatically. When that's finished, tap the Download Complete notification, then press Install on the next menu.

Still Camera FeaturesL Camera has plenty to offer for still image capture. Tap the 3-dot menu button in the bottom-left corner to see the various features. There are 4 options here—Focus, Exposure, Burst, and Camera Mode. I'll go over each of these in detail below.

1. FocusFirst is the Focus menu—by toggling the Auto switch off, you'll be able to adjust focus manually. Use the slider at the bottom to move your camera's focus point closer or further away.

2. ExposureThe Exposure setting offers options for both ISO sensitivity and exposure. Turn Auto Exposure off to enable manual adjustment.

3. BurstBurst mode will capture still images at a rate of 30 frames per second, and offers options for Focus Stacking and Exposure Bracketing if you're up for a little post-processing. All photos taken with L Camera are stored as both a processed JPEG and a raw DNG file. The latter is useful if you would like to make adjustments with software like Photoshop before compressing the file into a JPEG.

4. Camera ModeFrom L Camera's main settings menu, tap the camera icon to switch over to video capture mode and get.

Increased Video ResolutionManual exposure and focus options are still available in video mode, and both can be adjusted while you're recording. After recording a video, open your Gallery app to view the clip. From here, tap the three-dot menu button and select Details. As you can see, video is now being recorded at a resolution of 3264 by 2448, which is much higher than the Nexus 5's previous max resolution of 1920 by 1080. This new camera API obviously has a lot to offer, almost magically increasing the hardware capabilities of the Nexus 5 here. Chen's L Camera is exactly what Google had in mind when they opened up our camera sensors to developers, and while it's still in its testing phases, it already brings a lot of features to the table.What is your favorite L Camera feature? Right after Apple released iOS 12.2 dev beta 6 on Monday, March 18, it seeded the public beta version. So far, from what we can tell, the sixth beta includes a patch for an Apple Pay issue and yet another update to the "About" page in Settings, this time with a new section for warranty and insurance information.The biggest change we've found in beta 6 is this warranty and insurance status. If you purchased AppleCare+, you'll see that in the "About" section with an expiration date. If you didn't purchase AppleCare, and your iPhone is less than one year old, you'll see "Limited Warranty," including the expiration date for the warranty. And if your iPhone is relatively new, you'll also see options to buy an AppleCare+ plan right away if you don't already have one.Update: Apple's iOS 12.2 for iPhone Now Released for Everyone This new "About" feature seems to be a work in progress, as it's not on everyone's devices. Clearing the cache on your computer is (usually) a quick and easy way to help speed it up. Deleting those temporary files frees up space, helping you computer run smoother, especially if you have not cleared the cache for a extended period. However, finding the different caches in Windows 8 is a little trickier than in previous Windows systems.Since Windows 8 is basically running two different computing environments at once (the new Start Screen/Metro UI and the regular desktop) you actually have to clear a bunch of different caches.

Step 1: Delete Your Temp FilesTo start with the basic temporary file cleanup, go to the Start Screen and type "disk." You will see an option to "free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files" under the settings tab. Click on this to run Disk Cleanup. From here you can select the files you wish to delete and you can also see the estimated space will gain from your actions. But even after deleting your temp files here, there are still other Metro applications that require their own cache clearing.

Step 2: Delete Your Internet Explorer HistoryYou can clear the cache for the desktop version of Internet Explorer by following the previous step, but the Metro version of Internet Explorer is a completely separate browser.In order to delete its browsing history and clear the cache you will first need to open up the Start Screen version of IE10. Once the app is up and running access the Charms Bar (Windows Key and C). There you will see Internet Options. Note: IE10 must be open and in the actual window for the Internet Options to even be visible. There is no other way to access this particular Internet Options menu. Once open you will see "Delete Browsing History" at the very top of the menu. Click on this to clear it out.

Step 3: Clear the Windows Store CacheTo clear the Windows Store's cache you must open Run (Press Windows Key + R). Once open type in, WSReset, and click OK. It is by far the easiest way to locate files and programs instead of searching both computer environments. Windows 8 will learn from your previous searches to help prioritize which apps it searches first, but every now and then it's nice to make it forget. Since I do use this search function all the time, I want to clear this cache as well. Open up the Charms Bar and hit PC Settings. Click on the Search tab and you should see Search History at the very top. There is an option to Delete History. Click it, and the Search history will be cleared.And always remember to clear the cache on all your other browsers as well. While you can do this by going into each browser and clearing the cache, you can download CCleaner and clear the cache for all of your browsers at once (save the IE10 Metro app).
Step 5: Clear Your Live Tile CacheThe live tiles on your start screen cache the data that flips across them. Sometimes when you delete something, the cached version will still show up on the live-tile. I noticed this after seeing some of my deleted pictures flip up on the Pictures app live tile. To clear the live tile cache, open the start screen, and from the charms bar (Windows Key + C) select Settings -> Tiles -> and tap the Clear button under the clear personal info from my tiles prompt.

PrerequisitesWe'll need to get a few basic out of the way before we begin.Make sure your phone is fully charged. Register for an account over at HTCdev. Enable USB debugging in Developer options. Disable "Fast boot" in your power settings by going to Settings -> Battery Manager -> uncheck Fast boot. Have ADB and Fastboot installed on your computer. Back up all of your app data using ADB. Also, be sure to back up anything in the internal storage of your device to your Mac because this process wipes all data from your device, including pictures, music, videos, etc. Make sure you have the HTC One drivers installed. If you installed HTC Sync, they are already on your Mac. Unfortunately, Big Red (Verizon) thought it best to remove the ability to unlock your bootloader through HTC Dev. Because of this added security measure, any One running KitKat cannot be unlocked or S-Off'd. If you are one of the lucky few to still be using JellyBean, than you are in luck, as long as you S-Off your device you can unlock your bootloader.

Unlocking Your BootloaderThe first step to rooting is having an unlocked bootloader.Basically, a bootloader is what starts your Android operating system kernel. Every bootloader is device specific, which means there are different ways to unlock them depending on what phone you are using.The beauty of unlocking your bootloader is that you can install custom firmwares, recoveries, and ROMs without the need for HTC to officially push them out.Place your device into fastboot mode by shutting off your phone, then powering it on again by pressing both the Power and Volume down buttons until you see the screen below. Highlight fastboot by using the Volume down button and confirm by pressing the Power button. Connect your phone to your Mac and open Terminal. In terminal, type fastboot oem get_identifier_token. Now copy the identifier code (excluding the '(bootloader)' portion) and hold onto it. Go to HTCDev.com and login to your account. Select Unlock Bootloader and then Get Started. Select All Supported Models and then Begin Unlock Bootloader. Choose Yes, then Proceed to Unlock on the next 2 pop-ups. On the following screen, scroll all the way to bottom and select Proceed to Step 5. Paste in that identifier token into the bottom field of the next screen and click Submit. Go to your email and download the Unlock_code.bin that HTC emailed to you, then place it on your Desktop. Now, back in terminal, type cd Desktop. Then, fastboot flash unlock token Unlock_code.bin. Now go to your phone and, using the Volume Up button, select Yes to unlock bootloader and confirm using your Power button. Wait a few seconds and allow your HTC One to reboot. Congratulations! Your bootloader is now unlocked and your phone is basically back to stock, so you are going to need to go through the set up process as if it were a new device.

Installing TWRP Recovery & SuperSUNow that the bootloader has been unlocked, it's time to root!Once you are rebooted, go to Chainfire's download page on your Mac and download the UPDATE-SuperSU .zip file (Chainfire will always update the download page to the latest version). Once downloaded, copy it to the internal storage of your phone. Just like we did in Step 1 for unlocking the bootloader, put your phone into fastboot mode. Download the appropriate TWRP recovery .img file. If you have an AT&T, T-Mobile, International, or Developer Edition HTC One, go to this page to download the TWRP recovery.img file. If you have a Sprint HTC One, go to this page to download the TWRP recovery.img file. To install the recovery, type one of the following into Terminal. For the AT&T, T-Mobile, International, and Developer editions, type fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img. For the Sprint HTC Once, type fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-m7wls.img. Then type fastboot erase cache. Now on your phone, go highlight Bootloader (using the volume keys) and hit the Power button to confirm. Using the volume keys, select Recovery, then hit the Power button again to boot your HTC One into recovery mode. Once in TWRP, select Install, then select the SuperSU zip file you copied over earlier. Slide to install and then select Reboot System. That's it, you're rooted!
Now What?Once rebooted, you will have a SuperSU icon in your app drawer and be able to use it to grant apps root access, like the renowned Xposed Installer.After this is all done, you will be able to restore your data using the same guide you used to back up your data. Just be sure to re-enable USB debugging.
